Fall is the time to:
  • Cull out any unwanted fish. This needs to be done now to reduce the fish and waste load for winter.
  • Keep an eye on water temperature. In the fall when the water temperature is above 55°, feed the fish more often because they are storing extra fat to live on during the winter. Once the water temperature falls below 50°, quit feeding. The fish wonąt eat well and uneaten food will foul the water. Uneaten food can raise the ammonia levels, putting extra stress on your fish.
  • For spring bloom Aquatic Iris should be transplanted or repotted in the fall. Be sure to plant the rhizome 1˛ below soil level. Cover the soil surface with river gravel.
  • Keep leaves and other debris cleaned out of your pond. Once the leaves are removed, you can cover the surface with a plastic net to keep your pond free of debris.
  • After frost kills the top growth on your hardy aquatic plants, cut back the foliage and move your plant baskets to the lowest level of your pond.
